Notes for Contributors to the Scottish Archaeological Internet Reports

It is a requirement of the Scottish Archaeological Internet Reports series that reports submitted to it conform to these Notes for Contributors, for these aim to help authors achieve the accuracy, clarity and consistency of approach that their readers deserve. The time for a considerable amount of tidying and polishing is before, not after, submission. Pay particular attention to keeping old reports up-to-date and to checking references. Any rewriting of the report after refereeing should ideally only be for the purpose of clarifying the meaning and significance of the evidence presented. The SAIR editor(s) reserve the right to reject a report which does not conform with the Notes to Contributors, or where agreement cannot be reached over the incorporation of referees' comments.

Most SAIR pilot publications will be in an Adobe® PDF (Portable Document Format) file format. This has been favoured because it is increasingly used by electronic journals, allows easy indexing and cross-referencing within individual reports and also allows consistency of format across digital and paper media (files can be downloaded as required and when printed will be identical in layout whatever the users' computer and printer configurations).

These Notes cover: submission (1), digital archiving (2), summaries & citation (3), length (4), illustrations (5), style (6), references (7), radiocarbon dates (8), acknowledgements (9), refereeing (10), proofs (11), printed copies, off-prints & publication costs (12).

NB: THESE NOTES ARE KEPT UNDER REVIEW - always check with the SAIR Editor that you have the latest version when raising queries.
